NIOSH Spirometry Refresher Training

See also, NIOSH Spirometry Initial Training.

Workplace INTEGRA, in association with OccuHealth Training, LLC, is pleased to offer NIOSH-approved Spirometry Courses held at the Workplace INTEGRA corporate office in Greensboro, NC.

This refresher course reviews the critical elements covered in the NIOSH-approved spirometry course to ensure that practicing technicians and other respiratory surveillance program personnel are current in spirometry technique and understanding of regulatory requirements. Considerable time is devoted to open discussion and group interaction involving technique, recordkeeping requirements, and spirometry interpretation.

Course topics:
Bullet Review of technical procedures, common errors and calculations
Bullet Review of obstructive and restrictive patterns
Bullet Interpreting test results
Bullet Quality assurance, calibration and infection control
Bullet Recordkeeping requirements
Bullet Practicum

Who Should Attend:

Attendees should include those with current NIOSH Approved Spirometry course certificates who are in need of a refresher course. The OSHA Cotton Dust Standard (29CFR1910.1043) states: Persons other than licensed physicians, who administer pulmonary function testing required by this section shall have completed a NIOSH-approved training course in spirometry. This became the “Gold Standard” for anyone administering pulmonary tests in the occupational setting. A refresher course is currently needed every 5 years. (See "New Program Change" for details.)

Course Content

Flow versus volume spirometers; 2005 ATS/ERS Standard changes; Calibration changes; Review of normal, obstructive and restrictive patterns in spirometry; and open discussion and troubleshooting.

Note: Please bring sample copies of tracings for discussion.

New Program Change: 7-Month Grace Period for Certificates

NIOSH-Approved Spirometry course certificates currently expire 5 years after the course is completed. To renew their official NIOSH course certificates, technicians should complete a NIOSH-Approved Spirometry Refresher course before their current course certificate expires.

However, since NIOSH-Approved Spirometry Refresher Courses may not always be available at the specific time needed, NIOSH is instituting a 7-month grace period to extend the window of time for completing the needed NIOSH-Approved Refresher training.

For example, if the current certificate was awarded on April 1, 2008, then the technician may take a NIOSH-Approved Spirometry Refresher Course within 5 years and 7 months of that date, i.e., until November 1, 2013.

Course Length and Time

1 day (8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.)

Workplace INTEGRA provides free continental breakfast, water and afternoon snacks for these courses!

NOTE: Please bring copies of sample tracings of your pulmonary tests to review in the class.
