NIOSH Spirometry Refresher Training

This refresher course reviews the critical elements covered in the NIOSH-approved spirometry course to ensure that practicing technicians and other respiratory surveillance program personnel are current in spirometry technique and understanding of regulatory requirements. Considerable time is devoted to open discussion and group interaction involving technique, recordkeeping requirements, and spirometry interpretation.
Course topics:
Review of technical procedures, common errors and calculations
Review of obstructive and restrictive patterns
Interpreting test results
Quality assurance, calibration and infection control
Recordkeeping requirements
Practicum
Who Should Attend:
The OSHA Cotton Dust Standard (29CFR1910.1043) states: Persons other than licensed physicians, who administer pulmonary function testing required by this section shall have completed a NIOSH-approved training course in spirometry. This became the “Gold Standard” for anyone administering pulmonary tests in the occupational setting. Regulations did not require a refresher course although occupational and professional organizations recommended periodic refreshers.
Course Content
Flow versus volume spirometers; Recent ATS Standard changes; Calibration changes; Review of normal, obstructive and restrictive patterns in spirometry; and open discussion and troubleshooting.

1 day (8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.)
