Workplace Integra announces NIOSH-approved spirometry refresher course dates, May 15,  July 24 and September 20, 2013 to be held at 420B Gallimore Dairy Road, Greensboro, NC.

This refresher course reviews the critical elements covered in the NIOSH-approved spirometry course to ensure that practicing technicians and other respiratory surveillance program personnel are current in spirometry technique and understanding of regulatory requirements. Considerable time is devoted to open discussion and group interaction involving technique, recordkeeping requirements, and spirometry interpretation.

Course topics:
Review of technical procedures, common errors and calculations
Review of obstructive and restrictive patterns
Interpreting test results
Quality assurance, calibration and infection control
Recordkeeping requirements
Practicum

Who Should Attend:
The OSHA Cotton Dust Standard (29CFR1910.1043) states: Persons other than licensed physicians, who administer pulmonary function testing required by this section shall have completed a NIOSH-approved training course in spirometry. This became the “Gold Standard” for anyone administering pulmonary tests in the occupational setting. Regulations did not require a refresher course although occupational and professional organizations recommended periodic refreshers.

Course Content:
Flow versus volume spirometers; Recent ATS Standard changes; Calibration changes; Review of normal, obstructive and restrictive patterns in spirometry; and open discussion and troubleshooting.

Course Length and Time
1 day (8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.)

Skeet and trap shooting. Target practice. Cowboy action shooting. Wild game hunting. These are popular leisure-time activities in America, where the citizenry owns more firearms than in any other country in the world. An estimated 70 million Americans own more than 270 million firearms, according to a 2007 issue of Small Arms Survey. And several states have hunting laws allowing children as young as age 10 to hunt when accompanied by an adult family member.

But even as firearms provide people with recreational opportunities, they also can cause significant noise-induced hearing loss with associated tinnitus unless shooters wear proper hearing protection. According to recent studies, relatively few of them do.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg — who banned 16-ounce sodas, trans fats in restaurants and public smoking — has a new bug in his ear: young people who play their music too loud through their headphones.

The city’s spending a quarter-million dollars to launch a Hearing Loss Prevention Media Campaign warning young people through social media and focus groups about the risk of losing their hearing, The New York Post reported Wednesday.
